The program develops key skills in reading music, early technique and fingering. It does this partly through pieces, though the emphasis seems to be on improving your style through instruction, example and exercises. In this area, Instant Play Piano Deluxe is particularly strong. In 'Virtuoso Piano Trainer' you will find every scale and fingering exercise needed to achieve Grade 5 - remember that overall there are eight graded piano exams, so Grade 5 is not inconsiderable. If you actually wish to take graded exams you should consult with a piano tutor, however as it is always good to have an idea of some of the requirements at least as a benchmark. One feature that you may wish to use is the sheet music printout facility. This is useful if you are playing primarily on a real piano, and so do not want to be restricted to your computer screen, and the library of pieces provided by the program should last you a reasonable time. However, one thing that the software is lacking in this respect is the ability to import MIDI files into the program to play. This is unlikely to be a major problem as, by the time you have used up the library of pieces, you will probably be ready to move on to more advanced training, but it does limit you somewhat if you do not like the program's choices on offer. However, any problems relating to this are made up for by the quality of the different learning resources, particularly the video instruction. Many courses, although offering this, provide videos of poor quality where it is sometimes difficult to work out what you should be playing. In Instant Piano Player Deluxe, you can view full screen, high quality videos, that can be slowed to make the techniques on display more clear to imitate. Instant Piano Player Deluxe is also MIDI keyboard compatible. This means that you can input your MIDI keyboard (if you have one) and get feedback on how you are playing. The program does offer this basic feedback, but many of the benefits normally associated with such a feature are not present. For instance, there is no overall progress tracking and no scoring for pieces, something that you might find useful if you are a total beginner and need the reassurance that you are improving. Some programs that allow a keyboard input also give you the opportunity to record your playing; Instant Piano Player Deluxe does not. These may not be important to you, but if you are buying a program that allows a MIDI input it seems sensible to buy one that fully capitalizes on this, especially if you have paid a considerable amount of money for a MIDI keyboard. There are also a number of features, which, although common amongst the program's competitors, are missing in this software. Instant Piano Player Deluxe does not provide the user with audio examples or any games to bring light relief to the task of learning a new instrument. Nor does it give you any of the bonus features that you can find if you shop around, such as composition software or an extensive music history reference tool. These are mere bonuses, however, and can be replaced by buying supplementary programs or books. But one disadvantage that might put you off buying this software is that it gives no specific training in playing music by ear. And the problem is that you do not know if this might benefit you until you have started playing the piano. Some people find that they play much more competently by ear than by notation, and so prefer to learn primarily in this way. Regardless of what method you prefer, however, it is wise to at least familiarize yourself with both. This is potentially Instant Piano Play Deluxe's biggest downfall. Although lacking many of these peripheral
features, the program does offer a thorough course in the conventional
aspects of beginners' piano playing. A suitable purchase for a
beginner, this is not the most appropriate course if you have prior
experience in playing or plan to pursue your playing to a high
level. However, as an introduction, it does everything that is
