Instrument Master.com provides a wealth of material, resources and information for the beginner pianist, the volume of which is hard to match.  In particular, there are hundreds of exercises, scales and chords to practise and build upon, which are invaluable fundamental skills for pianists of any caliber.  With these, you don't just learn pieces, but skills and techniques that will improve your musical style and help you when you come to play at a more advanced level.  Use them as practice exercises to build strength, stamina and agility, or as inspiration in compositions and improvisation.  Some piano courses focus too much on exercises, making them dry and boring, but this program manages to strike a good balance between building up essential technique, and allowing you the pleasure you will get from playing fun and exciting pieces when you are ready.

The entire package provided by Instrument Master is extraordinary.  There are several different piano courses you can start, for different styles and levels.  And, not only do you get everything you need to start playing the piano, but for free they also include the same deal for the violin.  You need not be daunted by this prospect - both courses work independently, so you can learn one and try the other if you discover latent musical talent.  With the other features, such as the Online Beat Maker and Guitar, Drum and Bass Bonus, you have opportunities that are usually only provided by purchasing highly expensive and specialized software.  Not only is this a piano tutor, but a gateway to a multitude of new musical experiences!  If, after a time, you realize that the piano is not the instrument for you, you can easily have a try at the violin or the guitar, for instance, without wasting your money or the musical knowledge and skills you have already gained.  No other software, books or CDs that we have found can offer the same flexibility.

It all seems too good to be true - and in a sense it is.  Instrument Master for the most part does what it claims, but in doing so it does cut corners and you are only provided with the very least that you would expect in terms of quality.  The production of the videos is certainly not superb, and everything has the feeling of being hurried through, rushed out just to make money.  This is not to say that you should rule out purchasing Instrument Master, just that you should be aware that you are not going to get the same quality you would with a more expensive product.

One further potential disadvantage is that the software is only accessible with an internet connection.  This may be a problem for technophobes, or those who prefer to learn away from the computer.  Navigating the website to buy the product can also be difficult, but once you have, it can be used with minimal IT knowledge.  There are certainly benefits to this style of online teaching and, if you are comfortable with it, this method of instruction is advisable for at least part of your learning time.  It gives you the freedom to learn when you want, and the opportunity to direct your own learning as you see appropriate.  And, as this diverse package demonstrates, it opens you up to new opportunities in musical education and creation.

Although Instrument Master is an online course it, encompasses many of the features that you might expect of a CD or DVD course, such as audio and video tutorials.  However, as we have already discussed, these are not of the quality you would expect from many of our higher ranking piano courses such as Learn and Master Piano.  But in addition to these audio and visual tutorials, there are many additional features that Instrument Master provides, and Instrument Master has capitalized on the possibilities that this medium offers.  The online sheet music library is a superb facility, and something that all users should make the most of.  Another great resource is the information that is available on the fundamentals of music theory, something you will need to learn if you are serious about your playing.

If you want to become a virtuoso, Instrument Master.com is not the most appropriate product on the market;  there is definitely going to be a stage when you feel that you need something more advanced if you continue with it for a long time.  However, if you want to explore the possibilities of playing a new instrument and to acquire the means to build musical confidence, knowledge and experience, it is certainly a reasonable place to start.  And if you are able to get it at the discount price, it is not bad value for your money.  What is sad is that if Instrument Master had been produced to a high quality and you felt that the makers cared about the consumer, it would be a superb product.  The idea is good, and all the basics are there; but the feeling you get with some of the courses higher in our top ten, of being looked after by instructors who had your learning as their main focus, is lacking with Instrument Master.
