Editor's Verdict:

Like most products that claim to do so much in such a short space of time, apparently with only the need for absolutely minimal effort, Piano by Pattern does not quite deliver.  So short is this piano course that it lasts only '74 minutes and 64 seconds', apparently - why not 75 minutes and 4 seconds, I wonder?  This is just one of a number of unbacked-up statements on its poorly-designed and unprofessional site.  And claims such as: "enhance your piano playing skills by 400% in just a couple of days" are largely meaningless and entirely unfounded.

The author of the program, Scott Jordan, even claims that he 'worked out' how to play the whole of Billie Jean in 'about 6.5 minutes'.   There are several problems with this claim.  The first, and most notable, is that this man is the creator of the program, not a user.  Even assuming that what he says is entirely true; this has no bearing on the merits of the program itself.  But Scott Jordan also fails to mention something crucial: that not everyone has the ability to play by ear.  And many of those who do can do so without the help of a computer program - the skill is arguably partly an innate one, not a learned one.

Anything that claims to have found an entirely new way of learning the piano, and completely ignores centuries of inherited wisdom is suspicious.  It is true that many pianists, particular in the genres of popular music and jazz, never learn how to read music..  However, if you can, it is always sensible to try both methods at least to begin with.  If you do finally decide that the conventional methods are not working, invest in a high-quality product that will provide with all the tools you need to progress and improve.
