Editor's Verdict:

Piano Coach Deluxe is largely the same as the other products in the same series, particularly Instant Play Piano Deluxe, of which it appears to simply be a later version.  The reason why this is not placed in the top ten, whilst its cousin is, is that, although it offers little extra, the program is not available for the same great price.  Having said that, the ability to download each part of the course on its own is something that does not come with many other similar products.  If you are after one part of the program in particular, for example if you are already at an intermediate level and just want to improve with the Virtuoso Piano Trainer, you can avoid paying for something you do not want or need.

The program offers many of the things you would want for a basic grounding in the art of playing the piano.  (For a more complete analysis of the features, visit the Top Ten review of Instant Play Piano Deluxe.)  However, what separates this product from some of the top programs available is the lack of outstanding, quirky or interesting features.  It is very good at what it does, but it never tries to go any further.  From a software course (particularly one that is MIDI compatible, as this is) you might expect all the things you cannot get from a book - a comprehensive musical reference resource, composition software, and numerous musical examples.  Here, Piano Coach Deluxe fails somewhat.

It also focuses its training entirely on learning the conventional aspects of playing - notation in particular.  If you have already tried conventional teaching and are now looking for something more intuitive, go for a product that offers tuition in playing by ear and improvising.  Piano Coach Deluxe could be the perfect program for you.  If not, try something that gives a greater variety of lesson content like Learn&MasterPiano, our No 1 choice in this category.
