Editor's Verdict:

Piano Is Fun.comis a great program for young piano students, particularly those who have difficulty reading music.  Although the testimonials and the website itself suggest that older learners will benefit from it, we feel that they are likely to feel patronized and soon bored by the format of the software.  For this reason, we would advise this only for children or teachers of children.

The colorful, interactive and intuitive interface makes the program very user-friendly, exactly what you want in a program designed for children.  It also has an obvious system of progression from the earliest basics of notation through to a higher level of competency.  However, most importantly for a child, this program is exactly as it claims: fun.  If children do not enjoy learning piano from this program, it is difficult to imagine them ever enjoying it.  The most likely complaint you are going to get from them is that the program does not last long enough.  If they are particularly enthusiastic, they will need to move on fairly rapidly to something else and  if they do then the program has achieved its goal, hopefully instilling a lifelong love of playing music.

Whereas most 'adult' instruction courses cover all aspects of piano playing, Piano Is Fun concentrates almost solely on notation.  However, it does make the most of the opportunities this method offers, also coaching the learner in pitch and combining the sound of the note, its place on the piano and its written form and name.  In this way, the child learns in a much more holistic way than could be possible from a book alone.  Although not suitable for adults, and although it will only last the child a short time, this program could be the perfect way to introduce a child to the piano, or improve note-reading in a child who is struggling.
