Editor's Verdict: Play Piano Deluxe follows the same basic structure of the other similar products from its makers: Instant Play Piano, and Instant Play Piano Deluxe among others. The makers also produce similar software for other instruments, and if you have tried and enjoyed these, you will probably like this too. The structure and premise is largely the same, and is likely to bring you a similar level of success. The program is really designed for complete beginners, and therefore if you are coming back to piano after a time away or simply trying to broaden your experience and learning methods, this is not the ideal product for you. If you have played other musical instruments to a reasonable level, you may also get frustrated with the earlier and more basic parts of the program. And, although it is by no means the most expensive product on the market, it is still a wasted purchase if a quarter or a third of the course is unnecessary. The benefits of Play Piano Deluxe are due largely to its methodical and meticulous approach to piano instruction. ‘Step-by-step’ has never been a more appropriate description. Again, if you are already a pianist of some caliber, this will be extremely frustrating; however, if you are a total novice it will be quite refreshing. The lessons follow a clear and steady progression from basic to reasonably advanced, given the shortness of the course, and the practice pieces, scales and exercises help develop technique in a way that many similar courses ignore entirely. However, as with most products of its kind, Play Piano Deluxe caters for the interested novice, and fails to go much further. This may be fine for the moment, but for little extra investment you could guarantee months or even years of piano playing enjoyment.
