Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course : Lesson Book, Level One Review

Editor's Verdict:
This book, as you will be able to tell from the Chapters list if you have any prior musical knowledge, is very much a basic grounding in piano. It introduces you to the absolute basics of understanding: the clefs, notation, your finger positions and how you should sit at the keyboard. As well as this, it deals with the five easiest keys to play in, explaining their key signature and scales and giving you pieces to play in order to practice them. This approach is a sensible and clear one, which will ensure you do not become confused or overwhelmed, and is similar to the first steps that you might take if you were to have an actual teacher. Everything is explained in its correct order, and yet from very early on in the course you will be playing pieces you recognize. Not so many years ago, learning by a book such as this one would have been the only option available to the self-taught pianist. However, now that there are more products on the market, many of them interactive or featuring video and audio tutorials, you might wonder if there is any value left in learning in this way at all. It is certainly true that with a book you can never get the benefits of computer software: your playing cannot be automatically assessed, nor can you watch an example if you do not know exactly how something is supposed to be done. But there are also advantages: books can be transported anywhere, and even if you do not have a piano or keyboard with you at any one time, you can practice 'silently' or read the useful introductory information. Some people may also prefer the greater independence you feel when you work just with a book, not being tied down to the limits of software. You can do things in your own way and in your own order. If you want to make the most of Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course, we suggest that you also invest in the CD that accompanies the book. This will allow you to hear what tempo you should be playing at, recognize if you are making any mistakes, and even try to play along with the recording. This will make up for some of the benefits you lose by relying on a book. However, if you are serious about pushing yourself and achieving great things, and do not mind learning from a computer screen, perhaps a software package would provide the additional support you will require.
